EAR CORRECTION
What is it ?
Otoplasty (Ear Plastic Surgery) is a surgical procedure that retracts the ears that are stuck to the head. It is often performed on young people and helps to overcome complications related to "stuck ears". There are three main anatomical features leading to this anomaly: a large auricle, a smooth auricle, a large angle between the auricle and the skull. In most cases, the defect is combined.
What can be achieved with this operation?
- bringing both ears back to the head
- reduction of the auricle
- shaping the auricle
Who is a good candidate for ear surgery?
- It is best to have the correction done after 6 years of age when the cartilage has finished developing
- You must be healthy
- Have realistic ideas about the operation
- Being motivated for the operation, and not proceeding to it under someone else's influence
A meeting with Dr. Zayakova is the first step to the new, better shape of your ears. She will assess the overall structure of the pinna. You will be able to ask the questions that concern you. Changing your appearance will affect your self-esteem and confidence.
Informed consent: This is a document that describes in detail the procedure, the possible risks and complications of it and anesthesia, financial relationships. You should carefully read what is written. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your plastic surgeon or anesthesiologist. When the patient is under 18, the written consent of both parents is required.
What is the operation?
The operation can be performed under local or general anesthesia. It is usually performed under general anesthesia in children. The intervention lasts no less than 2 hours. The surgical scar is located in the fold behind the ear and is not visible. Various techniques are used to retract the pinna to the head. Doctor Zayakova closes the incision with sutures, which the body dissolves. Regardless of the method that was applied, the dressing after the operation is quite bulky. If you were given local anesthesia, a stay in a health facility is not necessary. General anesthesia requires two hours of observation in the health care facility.
What to expect after the operation?
The bandage is removed after 24 or 48 hours and replaced with an elastic band. It is recommended to wear this band for 30 days. The ears are usually swollen, bruised. In about 10-15 days they get a normal look.
A patient who has undergone such an operation can return to work after 10-15 days if he feels ready for it. Sports should be postponed for a month.
How long-lasting is the effect of otoplasty?
The effect of this operation is permanent. It gives an opportunity to increase self-confidence and a new look on your face.
Are there any risks?
All surgical interventions carry risk and plastic surgery is no exception. Serious complications are not common when the operation is performed by a qualified surgeon.
Typically after such an intervention, patients experience numbness in the area of the pinna and the incision line. This is due to the separation of the skin from the cartilage during surgery. Restoration of sensitivity takes several months.
Revision surgery: It is performed after a complication or an unsatisfactory aesthetic result. The incisions are made along the old scars. Recovery is faster and easier.
